Planning in October/November, while important, should not be the initial planning stage. It is imperative to have an open dialog and relationship throughout the year. After taxes are completed in March/April, follow up phone conferences are strongly encouraged in July/August and whenever an event presents itself. Proactive tax planning (before an event arises or is consummated) enables you to structure a transaction so you receive the most favorable tax outcome that is permitted within the law. Then in October/November, we review the year's activity to determine what actions still may be necessary to achieve the tax results we had projected.
